Last night, the students in Davenport went to bed thinking
that they had escaped the bleak Western Washington weather, but woke up to the
sound of heavy rain pounding on the church. Due to the downpour, VBS went
slightly different than expected, but everyone adjusted very well. Around 15
kids were drawn to Vacation Bible School, and everything went quite smoothly.
We heard lots of positive feedback from the students, so hopefully they will
come back and bring a friend with them.
Pastor Ted and the magic can
Unlike Western Washington, the weather cleared and we soon had
sunshine. After VBS came to a close, the
students ate lunch and went to a baseball field called by the locals, “The
Field of Dreams.” As a baseball player (this is Joel speaking) I can tell you
that it looked more like a field of bad hops than dreams. Our task at the field
was to put green strips into all of the fences (see pictures below). Apparently,
all of the strips were put in backwards, so it was our duty to take them out,
flip them around, and put them back in. We will be back tomorrow to finish with
the fence.
Who says work isn't fun?
After a few hours of tedious work, we returned to the church
for a dinner of tater-tot casserole and baked beans served by the gracious
volunteers here at the church. We then went to the Davenport pool where we took
a quick dip, showered, and hosted youth outreach at the adjoining park. About
19 local kids showed up for a time worship, testimonies, and playing the
garbage can game, water balloon toss and ultimate Frisbee.
Weird dance or...
the Trash Can game.
I would encourage you to keep the city, and especially the
church here, in your prayers. We have learned that the congregation has gone
through some tough times as a result of its switch in denominations. The local economy
and job market is also less than ideal which has resulted in many youths being pushed
in the wrong directions.
Over and out until tomorrow night!
