Harrington: So It Begins

The day began early for the Harrington Crew, as the showers at the high school were only available from 7:00 to 7:30. A rainy morning did not dampen our enthusiasm, and after a refreshing dip, breakfast was served and final preparations for the first day of VBS were undertaken. Local residents arrived early to help, and everything was whipped into shape with time to spare. Although we were initially disappointed with the turnout of 12 kids, ages K-4, God did amazing things anyway and we are optimistic for a larger group tomorrow. A particular highlight was a 3rd grader named Kaylen, who was given her first Bible, signed by Haley and Jonathan, and was utterly delighted, so much so that she refused to put it down, even for song motions. After VBS and lunch, we headed out for our first service project, painting tables and benches for the city park. Another of the day's highlights was seeing the impact we had on the park's local caretaker, Scott, a non-Christian man who has had some negative experiences with Christians in the past. It was inspiring to know his story and to realize that, just by working uncomplainingly, God may have used us as a step in Scott's walk with the Lord. Later on during the service hours, some of the Crew was recruited to wash the city's firetrucks in the now blazing sun. One delicious homemade pizza feast later, we made our way to the park for our first Youth Outreach. Unfortunately, we only had five of the town's youth show up for kickball, music, and  Mercy and Jonathan's testimonies. Attendance for both VBS and Youth Outreach is a big prayer request, and is something we'll try to address tomorrow.
